This song was sung during the Civil Rights Movement.  After the decision of Brown v Board of Education blacks felt they still had a long way to go to be treated equally.  They wanted more rights, including the right to vote.

Jackson.  Disagreed with his colleagues, thought Plessy v Ferguson was right and should be redone.  Blacks and Whites don't have to set together on railroads or other places as long as they are equal.
